01:02 pm: Blade Runner (note to self)
Even though Roy Batty is portrayed as the 'villain' I think he was the most understanding of all when it comes to humanity -- although android, he, to me, was more human than any of the 'actual' humans. He felt anger, fear, loss, love, and eventually peace. Essentially, Roy is humanity at its best and at its worst. It wasn't an 'end' decision to save Deckard; it was the gift of life. Through ultimate sacrifice comes redemption...and hopefully nothing the God of Biomechanics wouldn't let you into heaven for...

I think that may have been what PKD was trying to say. Our creations are more human than we.

I need to re-read the story, that's for sure. I went out trying to replace my PKD collection and no one had 'em anywhere... guess I'll just order 'em online now.

A friend posted something in regard to BR on another blog site; here's what he had to say: Roy and the other androids were basically children they were "grown" in a lab, they may have been adult sized and treated as such but their mindset was that of a child. It was the do as I say not as I do mentality of the creator who was in fact a little obsessed with toys. Anyway, as William Blake said children are inherently evil. They have to be taught right and wrong. These children Roy, Leon, Pris and Zhora are "used", discarded and somewhat disillusioned.

My retort:
I like that angle -- they did have a childlike innocence about them; however, if you remember what they were designed for specifically I think it's more like life from an abused child's perspective -- Roy - the combat model A/Physical and A/Mental, Leon - A/Physical and C/Mental soldier and worker model, Pris - Standard Pleasure Model and Zhora - A/Physical and B/Mental (Beauty and the Beast). So, they were genetically engineered to be mentally and physically fit although the world was completely new through their eyes. So, childlike innocence in a holy hand grenade.

Perhaps it's time for a Nook and eBooks? :)

All true.

What was Deckard?

I always considered Deckard a replicant even without the Director's cut dream sequence -- there's one particular scene in the movie I always wondered if anyone else picked up on -- if you note, all the replicants have a strange glow to their eyes at some point or another throughout the film; there is one scene where you see Deckard walk behind Rachael (after retiring Leon and washing up at the sink) and his eyes had the exact same appearance -- but it was the only scene I saw it happen. He was a bit blurred in the background, but it was obvious too.

About eBooks -- I still just love the feel of a real book! I know that just lessened my geek gadget cred significantly, but...

By, "What was Deckard?" I meant, WHAT was he? As in "Roy - the combat model A/Physical and A/Mental, Leon - A/Physical and C/Mental soldier and worker model, Pris - Standard Pleasure Model and Zhora - A/Physical and B/Mental (Beauty and the Beast)"?

Did you ever hear that the movie Screamers takes place in the exact same universe? This is actually a confirmed rumor. I find it amusing that when left to it's own devices, the same mechanisms that created the Replicants, could also create the Screamers, who seem if anything proud to lack humanity, though they are admittedly in early phases.

I talked to my other ubergeek friend Perry about this. As far as anyone can tell Screamers lack the choke mechanism. They could keep on trucking as long as they remain intact. What they also lack that Replicants seem to have at least more of is free will. The more advanced models seem to become aware of this flaw. ("We're so advanced, but all we want to do... all we seem able to focus on.. is kill the enemy?") Perry and I agreed that if a Replicant ever found himself on the Screamer homeworld, and it would likely be a Batty unit as the Screamer world was believed to be nuked to glass, there might be some problems on the horizon for that ol Humanity.

Incidentally Soldier, with Kurt Russell, also probably same universe, with Todd 3465 as a certain ancestor to the Battys.

I'm queuing Soldier on Netflix now -- saw it at the theater back when it came out, but my brain is so shot to hell I can't remember! Queuing Screamers for a re-screen too!
